BLACK SPRUCE: THE STRONGEST OF THE NORTH

Trees have skin. Yes, this may sound peculiar but it’s true!

Beyond the temperate forests, the Black Spruce (Picea Mariana) stands tall and strong in the Taiga region. Within the vast and diverse Canadian forest, it is without a doubt the star of nature.

Yes, Black Spruce is the star because of its skin (or what we commonly known as tree bark).

The Black Spruce: What is it? Can we use it?

The Black Spruce is native to Canada, with the largest concentration of Black Spruce residing in Quebec. Living through heavy snow, extreme cold temperatures, frozen soil, strong winds and ice storms, the Black Spruce can withstand these difficult conditions. Looking just below the surface, the trees’ bark is instrumental for its survival.

It survives summer freeze and that’s the last trees that we could find at the frontier of the Tundra, after that, there’s no more trees. Its bark also, acts as a real barrier against infections and insects. The power to withstand even the coldest climates makes the Black Spruce a strong, if not the strongest tree in Canada’s ecosystem.

If we look to our Indigenous communities, the Ojibwa, in particular, know how to use its bark: grounded to be later heated or inhaled to relieve back and stomach pain, and even treat psoriatic skin and eczema. What arises in the instincts of the Ojibwa, science now confirms the Black Spruce as a strong and amazing source of healing.

The Skin of the Black Spruce

Think of it this way: If bark is the skin of the tree, with its protective properties, can we use it to protect our skin?

Inspired by the knowledge of our first nations and after eight years of rigorous scientific research, scientists from Canadian universities have made a groundbreaking discovery. What we discovered is that the bark from Black Spruce generates bioactive molecules that benefit our skin : the RESVERATROL.

Its Bioactive RESVERATROL has revealed its great ability to regenerate the skin’s protective barrier, strengthening the epidermis, and most importantly for our sensitized Canadian skins, reduce redness with its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it is an effective antioxidant! Not only that, but as well it has properties for anti-wrinkle remedies.

Amidst the cold, extreme weather, sunrays and heat exposure, the extracts we’ve developed from Black Spruce’s bark preserve and protect our skin from damage and premature ageing. This means that we can target the main mechanisms associated with the environment and protect our skin in the long-term.

This is groundbreaking work! The same properties in the bark can be transferred to your skin to both protect and heal your skin.
