But do you really have sensitive skin, or do you have sensitized skin? What is the difference?

Everyone living in the extreme climates of Canada has experienced some sort of skin irritation at some point— redness, burning, itching, dryness, peeling etc. Because of the harsh climate, which in urban centres is exacerbated by pollution and dust, we all experience some form of skin irritation. But this does not necessarily mean that you have sensitive skin.

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is a genetic predisposition: when the skin is sensitive, the outer layer of the skin (the epidermal lipid barrier) is less effective in blocking irritants and allergens from impacting the skin. As a result, the nerve endings in the top layer of the skin are irritated, which make people with sensitive skins disposed to inflammatory skin diseases such as eczema, rosacea and other forms of dermatitis.

Because sensitive skin is a genetic disposition, you cannot entirely eliminate or heal it. But you can still have a good skincare routine to protect your skin from irritation and keep it hydrated, smooth and glowing.

What is sensitized skin?

Sensitized skin is acquired over time and is triggered by both internal and external factors that relate to your lifestyle. It can affect anyone regardless of skin type and age. Sensitized skin can be triggered by extreme weather conditions such as continued exposure to the sun, extreme cold, or atmospheric pollution, overuse of chemical products, incorrect skin product use, poor diet, inadequate water intake, changes in medication etc.

Unlike sensitive skin, which is a genetic condition, sensitized skin is acquired, which means that it can be managed more easily. Although you cannot always control external factors, such as frigid cold or atmospheric pollution, you can make sure that your skin has the best protection and care possible.
